The Sony Ericsson X10 Utilises Advanced Technology
By: Chris Westley
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has recently been at the centre of a UK TV ad campaign, suggesting the manufacturer has high hopes for the handset. Its popularity certainly looks assured, thanks to its impressive specifications in terms of both software and hardware.
The XPERIA X10 is not a small handset, due to the fact it is packing a large 4 inch touch screen. Its actual dimensions are 119x63x13mm and it weighs 135 grams. In regards to its slimline profile and weight, it remains pocket friendly and its large screen makes it a pleasure to navigate the Android operating system.
Levels of everyday functionality are very high, with many applications and features provided for a range of uses. Entertainment applications include a versatile media player which supports many different formats of both music and video files. A selection of pre-installed games is also provided to keep users entertained for hours on end. Social networking applications are included which allow direct access to popular sites such as FaceBook and Twitter, along with productivity features such as a document viewer and voice memo recorder.
A stunning 8 mega pixel camera is included in the X10's package of hardware. This operates at a pixel resolution of 3264x2448 pixels, providing an unparalleled level of image detail and clarity. Budding photographers are assisted by a selection of image enhancing features which are included in the camera's software package. These range from auto focus, touch focus, face and smile detection and an LED flash for low lighting conditions. The camera can of course shoot video as well, and this is in WVGA quality at 30 frames per second.
The generously proportioned 4 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen provides both a dynamic navigation method and a great display tool for media files, thanks to the pixel layout of 480x854 which displays 65K colours. The screen is protected from everyday wear and tear thanks to the scratch resistant surface, and an accelerometer sensor is included for auto rotate of on screen images.
1 GB of internal memory is supplied as standard in order to store data such as media files and documents. A micro SD slot is provided for the same purpose and has a pre-installed 8 GB memory card. This can be expanded further simply by installing a larger memory card, of up to 16 GB.
Vibration and ringing are the primary methods of alerting users to incoming calls and messages with the option to utilise MP3 files as ringtones, or take advantage of the included composer which allows custom ringtones to be created from scratch.
As expected a number of methods are utilised by the X10 to stay connected to both cellular networks and the internet. Class 10 versions of EDGE and GPRS keep the phone connected to cellular networks in all but the most isolated regions. A HSDPA internet connection is available at speeds of up to 7.2 mega bytes per second in areas covered by 3G, whilst Wi-Fi provides a faster internet connection. This is in areas where a signal from a wireless internet router is detected, offering broadband speed web browsing.
The large touchscreen with the Android OS offer instant appeal, however a further look at the spec sheet shows the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 offers something for everyone.
